Club Director

Lakyva Bason better known as Kyva, is a native of Navasota. She graduated with the Class of 2000 from Navasota High School where she played volleyball, softball and was a member of Region 7 High School Rodeo. She was voted “Most Athletic” in her class. Although her dream was to pursue a professional barrel racing career her athletic ability led her to play collegiate volleyball. In 2001 she attended Tyler Junior College where she led her team in solo blocks and where her team won a conference and regional title and was the first team to qualify for the national tournament in school history. A knee injury brought her playing days to an end but opened doors for her to start making an impact on young women’s lives as a coach. After working several camps all over the state of Texas she started her coaching career as an assistant coach under coaching legend Dana Hatch at TJC. However, her hard work would catch the eye of a young athletic director and would land her a Head Coaching job at Wiley College at just 23 years old. Although pursuing her degree had been delayed her career path was just beginning. When she started as a head coach at Wiley began she was also dedicated to being leading by example and finishing her education. In 2008 she would lead her team to the very first Red River Athletic Conference Championship in school history. She took her team to the national tournament and was name Coach of the Year for the conference and Coach of the Year at Wiley College. During this time she would also become a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated. With all of that going on she kept her word and completed her Bachelors degree in Criminal Justice from Wiley College as well. After several coaching jobs at the Division 1 and Junior College level she decided to obtain her Masters Degree in Sports Management from Dallas Baptist University. Lakyva is currently the Head Volleyball Coach at Elkins High School in Fort Bend ISD where she also teaches Physical Education. She’s also the Club Director for Houston Empire Club Volleyball based in Sugarland Texas. LaKyva resides in Missouri City, Texas with her husband of 11 years.
